South Shore

True New England scenery is abundant, with some homes in Hingham offering views of the Bay and Boston.

Welcome to South Shore

Beachfront suburbs, mature green, and well-mannered charm

Spanning from southern Boston out to Cape Cod, Massachusetts’ South Shore is a laid-back suburban community on the shores of the Bay. True New England scenery is abundant, with some homes in Hingham offering views of the Bay and Boston in the distance, while other communities closer to Cape Cod, such as Plymouth, look out to the endless blue of the Atlantic Ocean.

A rich colonial history is ever-present in modern times through regional architecture, cuisine, and several historic sites, parks, and world-renowned universities. Some of the nation’s most significant locations, such as Plymouth Rock and Boston Harbor, the site of the Boston Tea Party, are located here, offering locals a year-round front seat to live and play among the beaches and woods of which our great nation was founded.

Local Lifestyle

Life on the South Shore is relaxed, friendly, and largely centered around its scenic coastal location. However, the more inland communities of Norwell and Hanover are home to several conservation sites, parks, and untouched greenspaces. Residents of these communities dwell within beautiful colonial-style homes, often situated on spacious lots protected by lush, mature greenery, offering maximum privacy away from prying eyes. These communities might seem rural but are not far from Atlantic shores, their relaxing beaches and parks, and other modern conveniences.

Dining, Entertainment, and Shopping

New England is undoubtedly best-known for its seafood, history, scenery, and a wide variety of family-friendly activities. Whether it’s date night or strictly an adults-only occasion, there is something for everyone on Boston’s South Shore.

Legal Sea Foods is one of the greater Boston area’s most popular seafood establishments, with almost 20 locations within the state of Massachusetts alone. Clam chowder, lobster, cioppino, and lobster bisque are just some of their best-sellers, perfect for those sometimes-chilly New England days.

Alba on 53 is one of the region’s favorite steakhouses, also offering some Italian and Mediterranean creations. Prime beef, local seafood, and a wine list consisting of more than 700 different options are served under the supervision of Owner Leo Keka, a specialist in old-world cuisine with modern twists. Lamb, bolognese, gnocchi, and double-cut pork chop are just a few of their best dishes.

Scarlet Oak Tavern is a cozy, old-world establishment serving steak, seafood, Italian classics, and an impressive selection of wine. The hanger steak, lobster roll, and clam chowder are all New England classics. Seasonal and local ingredients are of top priority, as most of their produce comes from their own nearby farm.

Tosca, the perfect date-night destination, specializes in high-end Italian fare, seasonal menu offerings, and old-world favorites like seared scallops, beet salad, and “chicken under a brick,” one of the most flavorful creations in all of New England.

Marshfield is home to several scenic beaches and outdoor recreation areas, like Humarock Beach. A favorite place for family fun and activities over the weekends, this beach features seasonal lifeguards and resident seals which have called this beach home for several years. About ten miles south, The Nook Preserve in Kingston is an untouched nature preserve spanning across more than 15 acres at the mouth of the Jones River, offering visitors unrestricted views of untouched natural beauty.

Things to Do

South Shore is arguably most famous for Plymouth Rock and those first pivotal moments in American history. However, some more modern additions have made the area even more inviting. Great Esker Park, consisting mostly of a glacial formation created nearly 12,000 years ago, is the region’s largest open space. Train rides, carousel attractions, and other 20th century staples can be found at the Edaville Family Theme Park, which also offers several seasonal attractions. The Company Theatre in Norwell serves as an intimate venue for plays, musicals, and modern acting classes.
